Possible changes for 2010 season arising from 1st March 2009 Conference

The FFTC has been reviewing and discussing ideas generated by the conference and has identified the following possible changes for the 2010 season. We are stating these now to invite discussion and further feedback before we have to firm up any changes in September/October for the 2010 season. If you have any thoughts on these please pass them to FFTC Secretary Chris Strachan at chris.strachan@btinternet.com.

Space Modelling Rule Clarification

Everyone who flies FAI Space Modelling classes is aware of the local rule that is applied in the UK concerning the discarding of ejection pistons and/or wadding, rule 8.0.3 in the BMFA Contest Rules, section 8, Space Models, rule booklet. This has worked very well indeed over the past few years and we have even had success in the recent Spanish World cup, with wins in classes S6 (streamer) and S9 (gyrocopter), using models with captive pistons. However, reading through the rule, as it currently stands, it could be misinterpreted that S4, S7 and any staged models are exempt from this rule and are at liberty to strew the countryside with debris. This was never the intention and a clarifying, last sentence has been added and will be in force at the upcoming Nationals.

The clarified rule now reads as follows with the added sentence in bold type:

Jettisoning of Parts

A flight will be disqualified if any part of the model, as launched, becomes detached. The exceptions to this rule are for S4 (boost glider) where the engine shall be ejected in accordance with 8.2.4.1 and 8.2.4.2, S7 (scale) and any models that are staged. In all cases, the in-flight discarding of ejection pistons and/or wadding will result in the flight being disqualified.

It should also be mentioned that the 2009 BMFA Space Modelling rule book has not yet been published and there have been substantial changes to both S4 and S8 rules. Any competitor flying in contests in the UK should be aware that we fly to the current FAI rules. These can be found at:
