FFTC Meeting

The FFTC met on 11 June and the following are notes on items of interest.

Free Flight Showcase

Paul Fynn is planning the Free Flight Showcase at the August Nationals and has sent the following information and request for help:

“For the third year running we have been invited to share the big tent and provide a display of our planes and a team of presenters , so help is needed with providing models and with manning in fact just what we did last year!  To make an interesting change the plan is to build a couple of simple gliders over the weekend and raffle them as prizes complete with timer ,winch and line. I dont suppose that the planes will be finnished over the three days in fact the prize draw will be held a week or so later . This will hopefully give us a subsequent mailing list of people with some sort of interest in F/F who can be subsequently be advised as to the location of comps on a national basis.Such people could then be mentored.

It is also intended to display a significant number of Dixielanders in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the  design . We are not wanting to take from the support of the event at Middle Wallop but to provide a venue for more Northerly fliers. A wind direction from an easterly point on the Saturday evening along with improved supervision of the Scamble will provide oportunity for a good flying demonstration particularly of Dixies and of course other catorgaries. All these things can only be accomplished with lots of help. I look forward to hearing from you.   paul.fynn@talktalk.net   or 01664 454634 Thanks, its an interesting and enjoyable experience!”

Free Flight Conference Papers

The FFTC Newsletter No 33 gave details of possible changes for the 2010 season arising from 1st March 2009 Conference and invited discussion and feedback.

Some of you may like to see the detailed papers produced from the input generated during the conference when preparing your feedback or comments. If so please contact Mike Woodhouse at
mike@freeflightsupplies.co.uk or on 01603 457754.

Technology and FAI Free Flight Competition Paper

Feedback has been obtained from the paper issued earlier and the events held at the Stonehenge Cup. Taking these into account the next stage towards the objective of obtaining a revised approach to FAI competition will be to make a formal submission to CIAM for the adoption of single low tech options to be flown alongside the current FAI specifications. A number of possibilities are being considered and these will be developed as a draft proposal for discussion within the FFTC before obtaining final comments from the free flight community.

Rules for 2010

A paper based upon the 1st March conference was developed after the April 29
th meeting, covering both Class rules and Calendar, and was widely circulated.  Substantial feedback was received and has been discussed by the FFTC and is being used to further develop the proposals for rule and calendar changes for 2010. These revisions are currently being worked upon, particularly the calendar, and will be circulated for further comment as soon as possible

Space trimming on Salisbury Plain.

It has been agreed that Space flyers must use the same Area as in use for Free Flight (usually Area 8) under the same licence fees and conditions.

London Area Free Flight Site

For a long time the BMFA London Area has not had a nominated venue for Area events. Now with the increased availability of Salisbury Plain it has become possible for the Area 8 site to be used for these events and the FFTC have confirmed they are happy for London Area to adopt Salisbury Plain as their venue. Of course Salisbury Plain is subject to occasional military needs but experience shows that these are minimal on Sundays. As those who regularly use Area 8 know it provides a large area ideal for free flight and with easy access from London via M25, M3 and A303.

The London Area plan to nominate Area 8 for all Area events but before going ahead they need to know about the potential interest in using the site and the availability of people to CD the events. Potential users for Area events, London Area and others, should contact Peter Williams (Richmond MAC) at
peter.f1a@virgin.net or tel. 01252 842120 or Martin Dilly (Croyden MAC) at MartinDilly@compuserve.com or tel. 02087 775533 to confirm their interest. A CD is needed for each area event and to ensure this two or more people should share the duties so that a CD is always available. The CD's job is not arduous and will essentially be to set-up control with score sheets, a money box and score cards, organize fly-off times and collate results, most of the other activities being undertaken by the contestants.

The use of the field is subject to a day fee (currently £5) per flyer but regular users can pay an annual fee (currently £25) which offers great value.

This is a great opportunity to gain an additional venue for area events and it is hoped that sufficient people from the London and adjoining areas will give it support and CDs will come forward so that it can go ahead. Unless there is sufficient interest and available CDs the venue can not be adopted.
